about

This is a sweet old song, first published in 1911 and popularized by well known performers in nearly every decade since. 1920s: the Memphis Jug Band and Mississippi John Hurt, the 1930s by Jelly Roll Morton, the 50s by Louie Armstrong, the 60s by Bob Dylan, the 70s by Doc Watson, with more recent versions in 2003 by Gillian Welch and 2012 by Josh Ritter.

This was recorded in a tent during a rally at Occupy Portland, preparing to perform it later that day for a local radio station. I've picked verses that go well with the Occupy movement, and made some lyric variations to make it more specific to that experience. There is a lot of exterior sound in parts, where the speakers were getting a good response from the participants. They start marching towards the end and chanting. In some places I've turned the exterior sound way down so that you can hear what I'm singing, in some places I've let it stay up because it coincides well with the song. It occasionally sounds like they're reacting to the song, which felt eerily cool while recording.
